STAR CITY, W.Va. — One of the best-known interstate exits in West Virginia will be the focal point of a multimillion dollar gateway project.

Both West Virginia U.S Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito have announced $54 million in federal funding for the Chaplin Hill Gateway Project near Morgantown.

The project will include the redesign of the I-79 Star City exit, new interstate bridges, a westbound flyover and a bicycle and pedestrian connection between the Star City Bridge and rail trail.

The Star City exit is a main entrance to West Virginia and Mylan Park.

Manchin said the funding comes from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. He said the project will create jobs, boost the economy and help local communities.

“When we make smart investments in our roadways that hard-working West Virginians and small businesses rely on, we are building a better future for the state,” Manchin said. “I look forward to seeing the positive impacts of this project for years to come and, as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for resources to bolster West Virginia’s transportation systems.”

Capito said the infrastructure law continues to deliver for West Virginia.

“The Chaplin Hill Gateway Project will help improve traffic, increase safety, and upgrade core transportation infrastructure in Monongalia County. For all those who live and work in the area, as well as those traveling through, this funding will make a transformational difference and I’m excited for this project to move forward,” Capito said.
