Sen. Tammy Baldwin will serve as the top Democrat in charge of the appropriations panel whose purview includes the Labor Department.

The Wisconsin Democrat takes over for Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who chaired the HELP Committee last Congress and has taken over the Senate Appropriations gavel.

On the Republican side, the spending subcommittee will be led by Sen. Shelly Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), who succeeds the since-retired Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.).

In addition to the Labor Department, the subcommittee also oversees funding for independent agencies like the National Labor Relations Board and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Its work also includes the departments of Education and Health and Human Services.
