BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — The Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Co. will receive $170,858 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for fire-safety issues.

The overall FEMA funding, which totals $4,252,133, covers nine West Virginia counties, according to a news release from U.S. Sens. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.

The grant awarded Friday to the Berkeley Springs fire department comes from FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, and will help the agency purchase personal-protective equipment, according to FEMA's website.

Other FEMA grants have been awarded since June to the following agencies:

  • Bedington (W.Va.) Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, which requested $748,000 on behalf of all five volunteer fire departments in Berkeley County
  • Middleway (W.Va.) Volunteer Fire Co. Inc., $506,677
  • Martinsburg (W.Va.) Fire Department, $286,343;
  • Shepherdstown (W.Va.) Fire Department, $289,003, which made a regional request
