Boone Memorial Hospital in Boone County, West Virginia, has received additional funding for its new wellness center that is being built to improve healthcare services for residents of Boone, Lincoln, Logan, and Kanawha counties. The hospital had already secured a $14.3 million investment from USDA Rural Development, and now an additional $3 million is being provided by the U.S Department of Health and Human Services.

Ray Harrell, the General Council and Chief External Affairs Officer of Boone Memorial Hospital, expressed gratitude for the funding and acknowledged the efforts of U.S Senator Shelley Moore Capito, who helped secure the funds. Harrell stated that the new funds were necessary to further progress the project, which has been in development for several years.

Senator Shelley Moore Capito praised the investment in a statement, emphasizing the importance of ensuring access to quality healthcare for rural residents. She also highlighted the convenience the new drive-through options will provide for elderly patients and individuals with mobility issues, allowing them to seek treatment more easily.

The wellness center, located at the former Magic Mart store in Danville, will offer primary and specialty care services, as well as help reduce preventable hospital stays. The funding will cover the costs of relocating the current clinic, as well as renovations and equipment. The new facility aims to enhance healthcare accessibility and equity in the community and region.

Ray Harrell stated that in rural areas like theirs, access to healthcare has always been a challenge. The establishment of this health and wellness center is expected to alleviate some of this issue by offering a range of services. The center will feature a general clinic space, a pharmacy, an education and fitness center, a restaurant, and a drive-through clinic, which will be the first of its kind in the United States.

Harrell believes that this multi-faceted facility will not only reduce hospital visits but also improve people’s overall health. He hopes that the wellness center will become a place where residents can receive healthcare and engage in wellness initiatives.

Boone Memorial Hospital is currently finalizing details to advertise for a contractor bid to commence construction of the project. They anticipate releasing the bid within the next few months and aim to complete the wellness center by the spring or summer of 2025.
