Republican U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito called for President Joe Biden to step down from his position Monday due to her concerns of an “apparent cognitive decline.”
The longtime West Virginia lawmaker said in a statement calling for Biden’s resignation that she doesn’t believe he’s capable of finishing his term as president. The move comes less than 24 hours after the president ended his reelection campaign.
“We live in a dangerous world and deserve a commander in chief who is up for the rigors of the job,” Capito said in the statement. “If President Biden feels that he is not capable of making it through the demands of a campaign, then how could he be capable of serving out the rest of his term as president?”
The senator claimed Biden’s inner circle was to blame for letting him continue to serve amidst what she claims is a decline in cognitive ability.
“What is even worse is that members of President Biden’s inner circle—including Vice President Harris, White House officials, and Democrat leadership—have let him continue on amidst his apparent cognitive decline,” Capito said.
Capito also criticized current vice president Kamala Harris, who Biden endorsed for the Democratic Party’s nomination.
“Make no mistake, Vice President Kamala Harris represents a continuation of the last four years of President Biden’s disastrous policies,” the statement said. “Whether it’s her failed leadership on our out-of-control southern border or her deciding vote in passing the so-called Inflation Reduction Act that supercharged the skyrocketing inflation Americans still feel to this day, a Harris administration would be more of the same.”
Capito’s statement came after the president abruptly stepped down from his reelection campaign Sunday, sparking curiosity over who will become the Democratic Party’s nominee.
