Washington D.C. (WTRF) – Illegal immigration and the U.S. southern border remains a top issue on the mind of voters as election season draws closer.

Last month, the House of Representatives narrowly voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for allegedly “willfully and systematically” failing to enforce immigration law.

Democrats contend that Republican issues with Mayorkas are “policy differences” as opposed to “high crimes and misdemeanors,” which is the standard for impeachment.

West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito notes that since President Joe Biden took office, there have been 9 million illegal entries, with 300,000 this past December alone.

“In the Senate I believe we should have a full trial of Secretary Mayorkas. Let’s air it all out. Let’s here where he’s been failing and how he’s been failing, but let’s also hear about the Biden border policies that are leading us to this really unsafe situation.”

Ohio Republican Senator JD Vance, who also supports a full trial, notes that not once in U.S. history has Congress sent an impeachment to the Senate without the Senate acting upon it.

Capito says we’ll find out next week if Democrat Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer brings it to the floor.
