The Marshall County Chamber of Commerce host its annual dinner on Thursday night with featured speaker U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito.

Held at the Moundsville Center, the dinner and meeting serves as a way for the chamber to reflect on what it’s done during the past year.

The Chamber looks back on events they've hosted and has conversations about the different vocational programs they've added.

"I think it's a collaboration,” the Chamber’s executive director, Scott Reager, said. “We don't get the chance to see everybody, so we'll have everybody from our county commission, city government, business, WVU Medicine, WVNCC, so this is kind of way to celebrate, eat, and recognize some of the achievements in our community."

Different businesses and people in the community were recognized from small businesses to service personnel, teachers and others. Then, Capito delivered the keynote speech. Originally from Glen Dale, Capito talked about her roots in the county.

"I was just over at the county courthouse to see the renovations that they've had there and it's like coming home for me,” Capito said. “So, I've already gotten some really good stories. So, I just met the people that bought my parent’s house, so it’s been really nice."

With around 200 people coming together to celebrate the region's success, Capito said the county is doing well. She is looking forward to seeing more progress in the future.

"Marshall County has a great history in this state of industry and chemicals along the river,” Capito said. “The penitentiary, where we are right now, has sort of turned into a tourist destination, and I grew up in this area and see the changes, but also see some of the landmarks I had growing up.

"They’re growing, they’ve got innovative leaders, and I want to help them in any way that I can.”
