The Congressional delegation from West Virginia has sent a letter to Pres. Donald Trump and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) in support of a major disaster declaration for 13 counties, including Mercer, McDowell, Greenbrier, Raleigh, Summers and Wyoming.

Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Jim Justice as well as Representatives Carol Miller and Riley Moore in the letter support Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s request for the declaration, which would open the door for federal aid through FEMA for residents and businesses impacted by the weekend flooding.

“We applaud the tireless dedication of our State and local first responders, as well as the invaluable contributions of our neighbors and volunteers. Nevertheless, the demand for aid remains substantial, and we urge you to do everything in your power to make sure that our communities have the federal support they need to rebuild and recover,” the delegation wrote in the letter.

Severe storms moved through this region and the state causing widespread damage. Heavy rains, straight- line winds, flooding, landslides, and mudslides caused damage in 13 counties throughout central and southern West Virginia beginning on February 15.
