HARPERS FERRY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Jefferson County Convention and Visitors Bureau in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
“As West Virginians, it’s important we share our state’s beauty with the world,” Senator Capito said. “Our tourism and development professionals do a wonderful job telling this story and it’s important that we support them, which is why I worked so hard to secure the funding for this center. For many people on the east coast, Jefferson County is their first impression of West Virginia, and I’m proud of all the work of our local leaders and officials to help ensure this beautiful new center properly welcomes them to the Mountain State.”
In 2010, when the welcome center was just a trailer, then-Congresswoman Capito secured $250,000 to begin the initial work on the project, which is the first interaction many visitors have with West Virginia. In 2019, the last pre-COVID year, it served about 35,000 visitors, and is expected to serve over 50,000 visitors per year in 2022.
