U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito paid tribute to her departing colleague, Joe Manchin, in a Senate speech Tuesday.

Capito has served alongside Manchin during 10 of Manchin’s 14 years in the chamber.

Though they were from opposing parties, they were legislative partners on many issues affecting West Virginia and the nation.

Capito said their Senate friendship made it possible for the state to punch above its weight

“So it could be backing West Virginia jobs and economic development, fighting for our coal miners, standing up for our veterans, or addressing the challenges that face our rural communities,” she said. “Joe has always led with conviction and a very steady hand.”

Capito will become the state’s senior senator when Manchin leaves next month.
