Washington D.C. (WTRF) – This past Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that he will be stepping down from his leadership position this November.

McConnell is the longest-serving leader in the history of the United States Senate.

We spoke to West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito about the decision, who says she has great respect for McConnell. The two have worked closely for years since Kentucky borders the Mountain State.

“I am deeply grateful for his service as the leader and it’s been a privilege for me to serve under him and work hand and hand on issues that are important to West Virginia and Kentucky.”

SEN. SHELLEY MOORE CAPITO, R-WV

Capito called McConnell’s point about “knowing when to move on” very meaningful.

With both McConnell and West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin stepping down soon, Capito believes West Virginia will still be able to “punch above its weight” in the Senate, despite it losing two of its most senior and influential allies.
