U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., traveled to North Carolina last week with Vice President-Elect J.D. Vance to see firsthand the ongoing recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene.
Capito, a member of Senate Republican leadership and the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the united Republican government will not turn a blind eye to the devastation impacted by the hurricane in Western North Carolina.
“Honored to meet some of the men and women on the ground today in Western North Carolina,” Capito tweeted on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “Their commitment and resolve to building back their communities is an inspiration to us all. Our incoming Republican majority and the Trump-Vance administration will always have the backs of the American people.”
Hurricane Helene also caused widespread damage to southern West Virginia and neighboring Southwest Virginia.
Vance toured hurricane-damaged Damascus, Va. in Washington County earlier this fall with Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
In Mercer County, officials with FEMA announced late Monday that President Joe Biden had signed a federal disaster declaration for Mercer County, which will allow for FEMA assistance to begin.
