The Market Street Bridge will be replaced in the future thanks to more than $87 million in funding from the bridge investment program.

The bridge has been completely closed to traffic since December following inspections that showed loose and damaged cables.

Local officials are hoping to see movement on this project sooner rather than later. U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito said she knows how badly this project is needed.

“We were able to secure over $80 million for the Market Street Bridge,” Capito said. “I just talked to the West Virginia Department of Transportation last week about that project, how critical it is. We had so many citizens come to us and say you’ve got to help us reopen. It's a process, it's going to take a while but getting that first leg of funding is critical."
