West Virginia University will receive more than $6 million in federal funding for upgrades to its Personal Rapid Transit, according to U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.
Capito, a member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies, announced a $6.4 million award from the U.S. Department of Transportation for West Virginia University to fund renovations to the PRT stations and the guideway.
The award will be used on the refurbishment of the Beechurst, Walnut, Health Sciences Center, Engineering, Towers PRT stations and guideway.
“These improvements will help ensure that this iconic and unique transportation system can remain in place to help students get across campus for years to come,” Capito said.
WVU’s PRT, first opened in 1975, is an automated people mover that connects the three areas of the WVU Morgantown campus and the Morgantown central business district.
