Federal dollars have been authorized to help improve security at the Mercer County Courthouse.
A $245,000 award will be used for new security equipment at the courthouse in Princeton, U.S. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., said Wednesday.
The funding award was one of several announced for law enforcement departments across West Virginia Wednesday.
These awards, which were secured through Congressionally Directed Spending in Fiscal Year 2024, will be used to supplement equipment and training costs for officers in various police departments and local governments across the Mountain State, Capito said.
The following grant awards were made to law enforcement agencies in the counties of Mercer, Raleigh and Fayette.
– $245,000 to the Mercer County Commission for courthouse security equipment.
– $270,000 to the city of Beckley for new patrol vehicles.
– $36,000 to the city of Beckley for bullet proof vests.
– $202,000 to the town of Ansted for its hire-and-equip project.
“Local law enforcement is the first line of defense when it comes to keeping our communities safe. These additional resources will go a long way in helping ensure that officers and public safety officials are equipped with the tools and training that they need. Through my role on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, I was proud to work with these organizations to ensure that resources are provided at the local level and law enforcement officers are able to acquire the resources they need to protect our communities,” Capito said.
