LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Thursday morning, the theme was girl power as dozens of West Virginia middle school girls got a lesson in confidence and goal-setting from a woman who has broken boundaries.
Approximately 75 fifth grade students from Logan Middle School spent an hour Thursday morning with United States Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.).
"As the first female US senator, I really want to and I have been, talking to the fifth grade girls across the state about the importance of self-confidence, education and physical well-being, so that they can feel empowered to be United States Senator in their future," Capito says.
The event was focused on mentoring and encouraging girls to be more active, excel in school and have confidence in themselves and their abilities. It was part of Capito's campaign West Virginia Girls Rise Up.
As part of the campaign, each fifth grade girl chose from one of three categories: education, fitness or confidence boosters. They each wrote down a goal within that category to commit to making part of their daily routine.
Several of the students opted for confidence boosters, saying they wanted to become leaders in the school community.
Capito shared her personal story with the girls, as well as sharing examples of successful women in West Virginia and throughout the world.
"For me, we need more women in public service and I'm trying to kind of inspire the next generation," she says. "I think it's important, for example, for a ten year-old girl at Logan Middle School to know that Sarah Blair is representing them in the West Virginia legislature at age 19."
Capito told the students about her own journey with self-esteem struggles. She says when she was young, she never had a lot of confidence but now, she has to have a lot of confidence to represent the state and speak up on behalf of West Virginians.
The event ended with a group photo, a memento for each of the young students of the time they spent with a state senator.
Senator Capito will visit other elementary schools across West Virginia, as part of the campaign.
