WEIRTON, W Va. (WTRF) - "There's a sense of optimism in the Valley we haven't seen for years."
That's the general feeling after Monday's press conference in Weirton as state officials announced four million dollars in new grants focused on revitalizing Brooke and Hancock Counties.
"It's about creating jobs. It's about creating a vibrant economic opportunity and environment for investment. I'm excited to be apart of it," said Shelley Moore Capito, U.S. Senator:
Senator Capito, Congressman McKinley, Weirton officials and others have been working to secure this funding for the past two years.
What's their focus?
They said it's jobs and bringing a new, brighter future to the Valley.
"By putting this grant money into the Weirton area, we know it's going to create more property and opportunities for people to come in and have jobs. I think we're going to see a different look in the Ohio Valley. I'm very encouraged by it," said David McKinley, U.S. Congressman.
The new Weirton project will take 1.2 million dollars and develop 72 acres of land into a conference center and retail space.
Local officials said it's something they can't wait to see.
"I tell you what, it's just going to open up the gates to more investment and it's going to be a real positive for citizens and the communities," said Harold Miller, Weirton Mayor.
"We're very excited for the city of Weirton. I know both Brooke and Hancock Counties have been working together. We're just excited about the possibility of jobs, buildings and everything else coming up," added Paul Cowey III, Hancock County Commissioner.
Weirton City Manager Travis Blosser said they're planning to break ground on the project late July.
New business space will also be available for sale around that time.
