CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A handwritten note from President Donald Trump to Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., shows his support for West Virginia's coal miners.
On Dec. 9, 2016, Capito wrote to then President-elect Trump of her concerns about preserving retirement benefits for the nation's coal miners, saying, "I write to you to request your help and support for enacting the Miners Protection Act early in the 115th Congress."
A handwritten note from President Trump on the letter from Capito to the president reads, "Shelley- Great- I am all for the miners-" it is signed, Donald.
In December, Congress voted to extend the benefits in the Miners Protection Act through April of this year.
If more legislation is not passed, about 12,500 retired union miners and the widows of retirees stand to lose their pension and health care benefits.
The legislation has already been reintroduced in the U.S. Senate.
