CHARLESTON – It was a moment never before seen.
Paige Hunter of the West Virginia Air National Guard was promoted to brigadier general, making her the first female general officer in the state.
Hunter has served our country for thirty four years, receiving several awards and decorations along the way.
Although she has been the first woman to hold most of her military titles, Hunter said making history was never what it was about for her.
“But I didn't really think about being a woman doing it, it was just ‘this is my job and I need to do this’," Hunter said. “When I became a commander, that's when I asked my husband and my dad, "I think I want to apply for this do you think I can do it" and they both said absolutely. Then my dad said to command with compassion and Rick said keep doing what you’re doing.”
Several state officials came out to show their support for the now General. Both of our senators were there to congratulate her and they said they are looking forward to seeing even more out of her.
“It's really about what kind of person she is and what kind of leader she is, rather than just that she's a woman. She's just a great West Virginian, but today she has broken through that ceiling and I think she will be a good role model for many women to come,” Senator Shelley Moore Capito said.
“I've watched her do the job she has done representing our state and our country. Unbelievable. It's time and I'm glad it happened and that I'm here to see it happen. I think she has paved the way for many, many young women that are serving our country so gallantly,” Senator Joe Manchin said.
Regardless of her intentions, Hunter has certainly paved the way for more women to follow in her footsteps, and that impact will not soon be forgotten.
