BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - Today, the Biden Administration has announced new tailpipe emission standards for new passenger cars, aiming to cut over 7 billion tons of carbon emissions.

The standards will apply to new passenger cars and light duty trucks, with the model years from 2027 to 2032.

The EPA says the reduction of carbon emissions will prevent premature deaths and reduce respiratory illnesses.

In the US, transportation reportedly generates nearly 30% of the nation’s greenhouse emissions.

This announcement drew immediate pushback from state leaders.

Senator Manchin says the rule is reckless and ill-informed, and that the push for electric vehicles comes without a realistic transition plan.

Senator Capito says the rule provides a whole host of issues for the nation’s electric grid and for consumers who don’t want and can’t afford electric cars.
