Parsons receives $1.6 million for sewer upgrade project

The City of Parsons has received $1.6 million from the Environmental Protection Agency for upgrades to its sewer system.

“It will be better for our entire system in our sewer treatment plant,” Chief Operator of Water and Wastewater Departments John Lipscomb said.

The city will be using the funds to replace lines that leak and let in stormwater. During heavy rainfall, stormwater entering into the city’s sewer systems and overwhelming it is a common problem not just in Parsons but in many other aging systems across West Virginia.

The $1.6 million was secured through a spending request from Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV). The project in total will cost $4.8 million and the city plans to put it up for bid at the end of the summer.
