KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - For months, WSAZ has been telling you about the United States Postal Service conducting a mail processing facility review of their processing and distribution center facility in South Charleston -- a 10-year, $40 billion investment to modernize the aging postal system.

The announcement led local and state officials to express concerns the review could lead to a loss of jobs at the facility.

Just last month, WSAZ reached out to the USPS asking if any jobs would be lost as part of this review and they confirmed in a statement: “there will be no career employee layoffs as part of this initiative.”

But there are still more questions than answers.

U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., stepped in, sending a letter to the USPS in December. Capito asked, among other questions, if there will be any job layoffs, and if roles could be downgraded as part of the review?

On Tuesday, Capito said the response she got was not adequate. She said in a statement, “after multiple follow-ups, I am disappointed that USPS’s responses failed to adequately address many of my concerns and questions regarding the future of the Charleston facility. While I am glad that the facility will not close, I am still concerned that some jobs may be transferred out of state.”

Gov. Jim Justice and U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., joined alongside Senator Capito’s concerns. Governor Justice was not available Thursday for an updated comment. Senator Manchin’s office did not respond to our request for comment.

Following Senator Capito’s statement, WSAZ took similar questions to the Postal Service asking:

- When is a public meeting going to be scheduled?

- What is the current status of the Southridge USPS facility process?

- Will any jobs from this facility be relocated to a different state or facility?
The USPS responded back saying, “The mail processing facility review at the Charleston processing and distribution center (P&DC) facility in South Charleston is still under review. The postal service will provide additional information as it becomes available.”

So WSAZ pressed further for our questions to be answered, but USPS responded: “We have no further information to add at this time other than the provided statement. Thank you.”

WSAZ asked Senator Capito in her press briefing Thursday about the latest updates on the USPS review and she she was still not content with their response.

“So they are still not following through with their schedule, they haven’t had a public hearing. These jobs are exceedingly important to the Kanawha Valley and I am going to fight for them,” she said. “They are not being transparent, and that’s what we want. So, we understand the post office needs reform no doubt. So let’s have that hearing and let’s have some transparency. We have been going back to them after we received that letter to express our disappointment with that letter and the lack of detail.”
