KEYSER, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito has been traveling across the State of West Virginia visiting schools in order to empower young women.
On, Thursday she visited Keyser Middle School.
The program is called West Virginia Girls Rise Up. The initiative has three main components: education, fitness and confidence building.
Sen. Capito shared examples of various women who have made a profound impact on society through their achievements, including Olympians and civil rights activists.
She also engaged students on how they can become leaders in their own lives.
"I really feel that the senator inspired me to be more aggressive with my steps in life. Everything that I do will be different [now]," said Jada Sanders, a fifth-grader at Keyser Middle School.
At the end of the event, the girls pledged to incorporate activities that would further their education, fitness and self-confidence into their regular routine.
