WASHINGTON, D.C.-(WTAP) A West Virginia senator hopes the Federal Emergency Management Agency can move quicker to rebuild flood-devastated areas, including those in her home state.
Sen. Shelley Moore Capito chairs the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, and heard Wednesday from acting FEMA Administrator Peter Gaynor.
She says she's concerned about the lack of progress in rebuilding the southern West Virginia area hit by floods in 2016.
"But the individual assistance people get in the beginning, is critical, I think, in terms of life and preservation of property," Capito told us. "That's where I think FEMA fills in the gaps. The longer-term projects are probably infrastructure projects. But the schools in West Virginia are taking too long; I think we have to move them faster."
Capito noted FEMA is still working to rebuild areas along the Gulf Coast hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
