President Donald Trump has tapped West Virginia State Sen. Mike Stuart (R-Kanawha) to serve as General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Sen. Stuart would work alongside former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who President Trump picked to run the department on Nov. 14, 2024.
Sen. Stuart called the nomination a “tremendous honor” for himself and the state of West Virginia.
“I am truly humbled by this extraordinary opportunity,” Sen. Stuart said. “I fully appreciate that it comes with immense responsibility. I approach this great honor with a deep sense of purpose to support and help President Trump, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the dedicated people of DHHS to meet the historic and exciting challenge to Make America Great Again and Healthy Again.”
Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) congratulated on his nomination and said she is glad President Trump, “nominated a West Virginian to advance his agenda at HHS. As the agency’s lead appropriators, I look forward to the efforts we can do together.”
Sen. Stuart was elected to the State Senate’s 7th District in 2022. He unsuccessfully ran for the Republican nomination for Attorney General in the 2024 primaries. He lost to State Auditor John McCuskey, who would go on to beat Democratic challenger Attorney Teresa Toriseva.
Stuart ran Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign in West Virginia. He would then go on to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia.
