WASHINGTON (WV News) — U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., was elected Wednesday to serve as vice chairman of the Senate Republican Conference.
Capito, the first female senator to represent the Mountain State, was first elected to the Senate in 2014 after serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than decade.
“After serving as a member of the broader Senate Republican leadership team for several years, I am excited to expand my role and officially take on the responsibilities as vice chairman of the Senate Republican Conference,” Capito said.
“It’s so important that we listen more to the men and women across our country raising families and working hard to strengthen America, especially as we strive together to address the challenges we face. I am committed to doing just that, and look forward to working with my colleagues to help communicate our optimistic vision for the future,” she said.
Capito was overwhelmingly re-elected to the Senate in 2020, securing more than 70% of the vote to defeat Democratic challenger Paula Jean Swearengin.
Capito’s current term ends in 2027.
In addition to serving as the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Capito currently serves on the Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation, the Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on Rules and Administration.
