On June 21, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), ranking member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, and member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, along with U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV), member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $36,745,450 from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for three West Virginia transportation projects. The funding is made possible through the DOT’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant program.

“Upgrading and modernizing West Virginia’s roads, bridges, and transit systems is critical to our state’s success, and it’s why I have fought for needed resources through my roles on the EPW and Appropriations committees,” Ranking Member Capito said. “I am thrilled these three projects are receiving funds, and know they will make a difference in our communities in Charleston, Beckley, and Westover for years to come. I was happy to write the Department of Transportation a letter in support of each of them, and look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition.”

“These monumental investments in West Virginia’s infrastructure will create new economic opportunities and enhance the quality of life for residents across the state,” said Senator Manchin. “I am proud to have advocated heavily for these initiatives, especially the Capital Connector in Charleston, and I look forward to seeing their positive impacts for decades to come. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue working with federal, state and local officials to keep West Virginia moving forward.”

In November 2021, Senator Manchin joined Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin to announce a $1.75 million DOT RAISE planning grant for the Capital Connector project. Senator Manchin also called DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg to advocate for the project, which will upgrade and improve the Kanawha Boulevard corridor and Greenbrier Street gateway and make the city safer and more accessible for bikers, walkers, joggers and riders.
