West Virginia's representatives in Congress issued statements reiterating their support for Israel after waves of missiles were launched by Iran Tuesday.

The barrage consisted of at least 180 missiles, many of which were intercepted by Israel's air defense system.

The attack is the latest escalation of growing tensions between the two nations, with Israel sending troops into Lebanon less than 24 hours prior in its efforts to increase pressure on Hezbollah — a militant group backed by Iran.

Hezbollah has attacked Israel over the past year during the nation's conflict against Hamas — another Iran-backed group — in Gaza. The conflict began after a coordinated attack in Israel Oct. 7, 2023, in which hundreds were killed and more than 200 were taken to Gaza as hostages.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed late Tuesday to retaliate against Iran, which he said "made a big mistake tonight and it will pay for it,” the Associated Press reported.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., condemned Iran's actions as unacceptable.

“Iran is once again showing that it’s a dangerous and destabilizing force. These missile barrages against civilian populations in Israel cannot be accepted as a new norm," she said. "I will continue to stand in support and solidarity with the people of Israel as they face attacks from this regime and its proxies.”

Sen. Joe Manchin, I-W.Va., called for continued support from the U.S. of Israel's "absolute right to defend itself."

“Nearly a year ago, Iran’s proxy, Hamas, and soon after Hezbollah, launched a cowardly attack against innocent Israeli citizens. The attack was designed to disrupt the ongoing treaty discussions between the U.S., Israel, and Saudi Arabia. This peaceful coalition of nations and the opportunities that it would bring Palestinians is a direct threat to Iran.

“Further escalation of this conflict rests on the shoulders of Iran and the terrorist organizations they have emboldened and resourced for years. I will continue to monitor this situation closely and pray that cooler heads prevail.”

Rep. Carol Miller, R-W.Va., said, "The United States will always stand with Israel and its right to defend itself."

Rep. Alex Mooney, R-W.Va., similarly expressed support for Israel.

"My prayers are with the Israeli people as they defend themselves against the latest barrage of rockets from Iran and their network of terror. The United States must stand steadfast with our ally in the face of unjustified violence."
