HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — West Virginia's only medical adult day care center is set to open in Huntington in a couple weeks. On Friday, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito and other community leaders were on hand to tour to the new facility.

With the cutting of the ribbon, a dream with a price tag of more than a half a million dollars becomes a reality.

"A medical adult day care center is all the things you would get in a social day care with fun activities, food and these types of things," said Hospice of Huntington President and CEO Melanie Hall. "On top of that is additional medical services to help make it a safe environment for folks dealing with a chronic illness or things like that."

Hall said Hospice of Huntington will manage the new 5,000 square foot facility.

"Our facility is built to accommodate 24 people at any time," Hall added.

Capito said both her parents received Hospice care. Not only will a medical adult day care center help the elderly, but she also said it will help caregivers.

"It gives caregivers some relief hours. It's also in some cases more affordable than private care and certainly assisted living care. It gives caregivers a chance to recharge their batteries, take care of their own life and maybe work," the senator said.

The new facility is set to offer social activities, a skilled nursing staff and assistance with personal care. The center is in the process of being licensed by the State of West Virginia.
