West Virginia’s congressional representatives and Gov. Jim Justice were united Monday in condemning escalating violence in Israel after a surprise attack this weekend by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Israel and the Hamas militants find themselves in a fresh cycle of intensifying conflict after an unexpected and widespread assault began Saturday. The assault involved aerial, maritime and ground maneuvers by the Palestinian faction from the Gaza Strip. In response, Israel declared war on Hamas and has been bombarding Gaza with rockets and aerial bombs. The Associated Press reported 1,600 total deaths since Saturday.

West Virginia’s representatives in Congress released statements on the situation. Some were not available for additional comment when contacted Monday, which was the Columbus Day holiday. Others declined to comment beyond their prepared statements.
