WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee’s Legislative Branch Subcommittee, today expressed her disappointment that Senate Democrats refused to honor commitments to veterans and allow consideration of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. The motion to invoke cloture on the bill failed on a 50-44 vote.

The appropriations bill, which funds veterans’ services, military housing, family support and hospital and health facilities construction, passed out of the Appropriations Committee with strong bipartisan support in May.

“Governing is about setting priorities and bringing fiscal responsibility to the federal government while ensuring that it provides necessary investments and services. Supporting our veterans is not only necessary, it’s what our men and women deserve,” said Senator Capito.

“I am disappointed that the Democrats who supported this bill in the Appropriations Committee changed their position today. By blocking debate on a bipartisan bill that provides funding for military construction and Veterans Affairs, Senate Democrats have turned their backs on America’s veterans and not fulfilled the job they were sent here to do.”

Senator Capito delivered a speech on the Senate floor this morning urging Democrats to support the appropriations bill. Click here or the image to watch Senator Capito’s speech.
