CHARLESTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $250,000 for the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program in two locations in West Virginia. This funding is made available through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and will support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance abuse among young people.
“One way or another, we have all felt the pain that opioids and other illegal drugs have inflicted on our communities. Programs like this help us reduce substance abuse among youth by addressing community factors that increase addiction risk, in turn lowering addictions levels across our state,” Senator Capito said. “Since coming to Congress, I have worked hard to increase funding for West Virginia related to drug addiction prevention, and I will continue to do so through my role on the Senate Appropriations Committee.”
“We are facing an epidemic within a pandemic. West Virginia has been ravaged by the opioid epidemic and every community in our state has felt the pain of losing a loved one to this terrible crisis,” said Senator Manchin. “This funding will help the Huntington and Princeton communities support one another through these difficult times. I will not stop fighting until we have the support and funding we need to combat this epidemic here in the Mountain State.”
