Weekly Address to West Virginians
April 24, 2015
Hello, I’m Senator Shelley Moore Capito.
Thanks for watching my weekly Senate update.
In just three-and-a-half months, the new Republican majority has made significant progress bringing bipartisanship and productivity back to the Senate.
One prime example is the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, which passed the Senate this week after Democrats ended their weeks-long filibuster.
Earlier this month I hosted a Human Trafficking Summit near Wheeling to learn more about how we can end modern-day slavery.
This legislation is a step in the right direction, and I’m pleased that the Senate came together to pass this bill.
This week, I spoke to the Secretaries of both the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Transportation about issues that are important to West Virginia.
On Tuesday, I pressed VA Secretary Robert McDonald about the recent closure of the Greenbrier County Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Maxwelton.
I was glad to hear that this facility is high on their agenda.
I look forward to continuing a dialogue about how to get the best care for West Virginia’s veterans.
On Wednesday, I spoke with Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx about rail safety in light of the recent train derailment in Fayette County.
Secretary Foxx assured me that rail safety is a top priority.
DOT has promised to finalize a rule dealing with rail safety this spring, and Congress will hold them accountable for doing that.
