Weekly Address to West Virginians
May 1, 2015

Hello, I’m Senator Shelley Moore Capito.

Thanks for watching my weekly Senate update.

On Monday, I convened a drug prevention summit at the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department in Martinsburg.

Federal officials, law enforcement and drug control advocates participated in a panel discussion about how to tackle West Virginia’s drug epidemic head on.

The summit provided a better understanding of just how destructive the drug problem is in our state, and brought to light the dire need for treatment facilities in West Virginia.

I am committed to bringing more attention to the table so we can combat this problem. This week’s drug prevention summit was a good first step.

This week I also voted for an important bipartisan bill that will protect our communities from toxic chemicals.

As the Freedom Industries spill in Charleston illustrated, our toxic chemical regulatory framework must be updated.

The Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act, which I am proud to co-sponsor, will keep our families healthy and safe.
