WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) announced that Federal funding has been awarded by the National Cancer Institute to West Virginia University to fund cutting edge research to fight cancer.

“Last summer I hosted leaders from the National Institutes of Health, an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services, at WVU to showcase the significant contributions being made to medical research right here in West Virginia. I am glad that the University’s groundbreaking cancer biology research continues to be recognized, and I am hopeful that this federal funding will lead to a potential breakthrough,” said Senator Capito.

“This is wonderful news for WVU and our entire state,” Senator Manchin said. “For our economy to continue to grow we must attract the best and brightest students to West Virginia, and investing in academic research is a way to do so. This grant will help provide WVU with the resources they need to carry out advanced research projects and it will enrich our students with hands on experience that will better enable them to compete with other institutions around the country. I thank WVU for their leadership and I applaud them on their continued efforts to excel.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) National Cancer Institute awarded a $342,554 five-year Bioengineering Research Grant to West Virginia University for the purpose of research that identifies collateral targets in breast and lung carcinomas to broaden the clinical benefit available from immunotherapies when treating cancer.
