WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) announced that the YWCA of Wheeling will receive $250,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Office on Violence Against Women for the Transitional Housing Grant Assistance Program.

The Transitional Housing Grant Assistance Program aims to provide needed aid to individuals who are homeless or in need of housing assistance and are victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking. The program’s goal is to deliver flexible support to victims, including transitional housing services. The victim-centered approach that the program has adopted allows victims to select the course of action that suits their individual needs. The YWCA of Wheeling will use these funds to provide housing and supportive services to help victims shift from transitional to permanent housing.

“West Virginians are known for coming together in times of need, and we are proud of this reputation,” said Senator Capito. “I am so glad to announce this award for the YWCA of Wheeling. This funding will help individuals get back on solid footing and put them on a path to long-term recovery by providing housing opportunities and supportive services.”

“As a proud supporter of the Violence Against Women Act, I am pleased to see this funding for transitional housing programs in Wheeling. I have had the pleasure to tour this YWCA, speak to the dedicated staff there and see firsthand the positive impact that they are making in so many lives. This funding will support efforts to rebuild the lives of domestic violence victims and provide the dignity of a safe environment in which they can move forward. During my time as Governor and now as Senator, I have heard so many stories from organizations in West Virginia about how these grants make a tremendous difference to families as they begin to rebuild,” Senator Manchin said.
