WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) announced a total of $44,525.95 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Interior for the restoration of West Virginia’s Shepherdstown Battlefield in Jefferson County. This funding will be used to preserve over 14 acres of historic battle grounds in West Virginia.
“Our state’s proud tradition of service extends all the way to its very inception,” Senator Capito said. “Maintaining the Shepherdstown Battlefield is an important duty we owe to the legacy of those who sacrificed so much, and it will inspire West Virginians who learn of their bravery and sacrifice.”
“As a state born out of the Civil War, West Virginia’s earliest history is directly tied to the battlefields where our ancestors sacrificed their lives in a united pursuit of freedom and justice,” Senator Manchin said. “Preserving the hallowed grounds of Shepherdstown Battlefield will ensure that its history is protected for future generations of West Virginians to learn from and this funding will help guarantee just that.”
