WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today announced legislation to honor the life and legacy of West Virginia native and famed mathematician Katherine Johnson. The bill would rename the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) Facility in Fairmont, West Virginia, after Johnson, who will celebrate her 100th birthday on Sunday.

“Katherine Johnson is a trailblazer and an icon, and as a West Virginia native, she represents what makes our state and our nation so great. I cannot think of a more fitting tribute than to rename NASA’s only facility in West Virginia after her. This would be a living tribute to the agency she served, the state she was born in, and the missions she championed and helped make possible. The men and women at IV&V who specialize in providing safety through mission critical software, all stand on the shoulders of the incredible work Katherine and her colleagues did. This is one way we can ensure Katherine Johnson’s contributions are remain no longer hidden.”
