WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) announced $850,000 in funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for West Virginia University (WVU) through the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program.

Over 20 universities were selected to receive these grants, but only nine, including WVU, were selected to test their research aboard the International Space Station.

“We can now say without a doubt that the research being conducted at WVU is out of this world,” Senator Capito said. “The recent achievements by the students and faculty bring enormous pride to our state and the promise of scientific discovery to benefit all of us is worthy of this investment.”

As a member of the Commerce, Justice and Science Subcommittee on the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Capito has been a staunch advocate for science research, particularly for the EPSCoR program at NASA, along with the Space Grant program at the agency. She recently had the opportunity to stress that support and the need for our continued investment in education funding at NASA at a hearing with NASA Acting Administrator Robert Lightfoot.

Individual awards for WVU are listed below:

  • $750,000 – Fast Traversing Autonomous Rover for Mars Sample Collection
  • $100,000 – 3-D Printed Titanium Dixoide Foams Under Extreme Exposure At Low Earth Orbit
