WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee and a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to the Town of Kermit, W.Va. and the Town of Alderson, W.Va.

These awards, which were secured through Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) requests made by Senator Capito, will be used to renovate water systems in Kermit, W.Va. and Alderson, W.Va. that are in need of repair.

“Kermit has shown an enormous amount of resiliency in dealing with their water challenges since the floods that damaged their Water Treatment Plant and I am thrilled to see them getting the funding needed to upgrade their water system, which will better serve the hundreds of residents and help families have reliable, clean running water,” Ranking Member Capito said. “I am also glad to see funds starting to flow into the Town of Alderson to help expand the reach of its water system and serve more West Virginians. The new tank and reliable infrastructure will help the community in its ability to fight fires and protect its people.”

Individual award details listed below:

  • $2,747,000 EPA CDS award to the Town of Kermit, W.Va. to rehabilitate Kermit’s only WTP and replace waterlines to provide critical water resources to residents and businesses. This project will extend the service life of the treatment facility so it can continue to serve customers, many of whom have had to purchase water elsewhere since the 2015 floods.
  • First phase of a $2,000,000 EPA CDS award to the Town of Alderson, W.Va. to extend water service to the community of Riverside Rest and to repair or replace various parts of the water system. This includes the replacement of a water storage tank, valves, and hydrants, which are expected to lead to a continued reliable source of water service and fire protection for the residents and the surrounding community within Greenbrier, Monroe, and Summers counties. [NOTE: This CDS award was secured solely by Senator Capito]
