WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) issued the following statement after today’s votes on the motion to invoke cloture on the Iran Nuclear Agreement Resolution of Disapproval and the motion to invoke cloture on an amendment offered by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell earlier this week. The amendment would link sanctions relief to a change in Iranian behavior. Both measures were blocked by Senate Democrats.
“I am extremely disappointed that a partisan minority of Senators today obstructed the bipartisan majority from giving a voice to the countless Americans who disapprove of this bad deal with Iran. Having worked together just four months ago to ensure the opportunity for Congress to review this agreement, it is upsetting that 42 of my Democratic colleagues reversed course and denied the Senate the ability to take a true up-or-down vote on a resolution disapproving it.
“Even more troubling is the denial of a vote on an amendment that would block sanctions relief until Iran both recognizes Israel’s right to exist and releases American hostages. Even those who support the nuclear agreement should have voted to protect Israel and bring home the American prisoners being held in Iran. A foreign policy agreement of this magnitude should have received a vote.”
