WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, helped craft legislation included in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 appropriations omnibus package that would protect our Homeland, strengthen border security, enhance cybersecurity, and support the work of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and the U.S. Secret Service. The package passed the Senate on Thursday evening.

“From basically day one of the Biden presidency, we have faced a consistent crisis on our southern border. This bill aims to step in to provide direction and leadership to help stem that tide. The bill also funds increased personnel, investments in technology, physical barriers, and support for the commitment and sacrifice put forth by the men and women of DHS provide every single day. Our nation cannot continue to handle this influx of people crossing our southern border, and West Virginia cannot continue to handle the influx of drugs that too often end up in our state,” Ranking Member Capito said.

BILL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Provides an 11% increase for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including $6.5 billion for much needed investments in border security resources and a 7% increase for ICE operations.
  • Makes investments in border security, cybersecurity, aviation security, state and local grants, and other programs to keep Americans safe.
  • Funds priorities that affect the lives of nearly every American, from securing our borders and combatting terrorism to improving cybersecurity and responding to natural disasters.
  • Restores $2 billion in funding for wall construction on the southwest border.
