CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) joined a bipartisan group of her Senate colleagues in introducing a resolution designating June 6, 2024 as National Naloxone Awareness Day. The resolution – led by U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) – recognizes the devastating impact of the opioid crisis across America and the vital role of Naloxone as a safe and effective medication that can reverse opioid overdoses and save lives.

“Naloxone is an important tool in our battle against the opioid epidemic, and has become an effective treatment that saves lives from overdoses. This medication has given people effected by opioid addiction a second chance and allowed individuals to get on a path towards recovery. As our communities continue to battle this epidemic that has taken far too many lives, I’m joining my colleagues to recognize this valuable asset and work to increase its availability,” Senator Capito said.

BACKGROUND:

Earlier this year, Senator Capito authored language included in the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2024 that encourages an opioid overdose reversal medication be included in onboard Emergency Medical Kits on commercial aircraft. This legislation has since been signed into law. More details here.
