WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) announced today that three volunteer fire departments in West Virginia will receive a total of $124,654 under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. The funds will go toward operations and safety, and can be used to purchase training and protective gear, as well as to make health and safety improvements to stations and facilities.

“As firefighters work to save people and property from hazardous fires, we must work to ensure they have the resources needed to do their jobs and keep our communities safe. West Virginia’s volunteer firefighters have answered the call to help others, and I am glad that this vital funding will help support safety and operations at the Star City, McKinleyville and Hundred volunteer fire departments,” said Senator Capito.

“Our first responders in West Virginia sacrifice so much to protect our families and our homes,” said Senator Manchin, who has worked with the volunteer rescue squad in Marion County. “These grants will help make sure local fire departments in Star City, Wellsburg and Hundred have access to the necessary equipment and training they need to keep our communities safe and secure each and every day.”

A program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and to enhance their ability to protect the public and first responders from fire and related hazards.

The individual award amounts are listed below:

  • $74,958 – Star City Volunteer Fire Department
  • $24,762 – McKinleyville Volunteer Fire Department
  • $24,934 – Hundred Volunteer Fire Department
