WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $2,116,460 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for the establishment of the Visual Sciences Center of Biomedical Research Excellence at West Virginia University. Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence support the establishment and development of innovative, state-of-the-art biomedical and behavioral research centers and institutions in states that are Institutional Development Award (IDeA) eligible.
“West Virginia University has proven to be a consistent leader in a variety of research fields and remains an R1 institution because of their academic success. When I first came to the Senate, I hosted National Institute of Health (NIH) leaders in Morgantown to highlight the biomedical research happening at WVU, and it’s great to see that NIH and NIGMS are continuing to invest into research capabilities in West Virginia. Today’s announcement is great news for WVU and the entire state, and I’m confident it will lead to great success in the future,” Senator Capito said.
“West Virginia University continues to be a leader in many academic fields, including vital scientific research. I’m pleased HHS is investing in West Virginia University to support our hardworking students, faculty and staff who are involved with innovative biomedical research activities,” Senator Manchin said. “As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee I have supported IDeA funding, and look forward to seeing the positive impacts of this center. I will continue advocating for funding that enhances students’ learning opportunities across the Mountain State.”
