WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $2,648,506 from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) for Richwood to help repair damage that occurred during the 2016 floods. Specifically, this funding will be used to restore the roadway and damaged right-of-ways, restore the drainage system, and install a redesigned storm sewer, municipal water, and sanitary sewer system along Oakford Avenue in downtown.
“We will never forget the lives lost and destruction created as a result of the horrible floods in 2016. That’s why as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, I’ve continued to make certain that West Virginia receives the funding we are due not only to repair previous damages, but also to help prevent possible flash floods in the future. This partnership between FEMA, the West Virginia Division of Highways, and the community of Richwood will help repair critical infrastructure, and move the community forward. I will continue to use my role on the Senate Appropriations Committee to advocate for funding that makes a direct impact in the lives of West Virginians back home,” said Senator Capito.
“The 2016 floods took 23 West Virginians from us and caused terrible destruction across parts of our state, but we didn’t let that stop us. Our entire state came together, as West Virginian’s do in times of crisis, to support our neighbors, family, and friends during this horrible disaster. Over four years later, our communities are still rebuilding and I’m pleased that the City of Richwood, will be receiving funding to help their efforts. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for funding that helps our communities heal,” Senator Manchin said.
