WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $399,650 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for substance use research at Marshall University and cancer treatment research at West Virginia University (WVU).

“West Virginia University and Marshall University provide top-notch academic opportunities for students and facilitate research projects that have the ability to create meaningful change in our state. I’m glad to help announce this funding today, which will contribute to efforts that work towards curbing drug addiction and preventing cancer in our state, and I will continue to advocate for funding like this to support future research efforts,” Senator Capito said.

“Marshall University and West Virginia University are leaders in numerous academic fields, including vital medical research. I’m pleased HHS is investing in this critical research at Marshall and WVU to combat substance use disorder and improve our understanding of how to prevent cancer,” Senator Manchin said. “I look forward to seeing the positive impacts of this funding and as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for resources to support medical research programs across the Mountain State.”

Individual awards listed below:

  • $222,000 – Marshall University: Drug Abuse and Addiction Research Programs
    • This funding will support the discovery of genetic and genomic mechanisms driving the relationship between social reward and cocaine addiction. 
  • $177,650 – West Virginia University: Cancer Treatment Research
    • This funding will support investigating the mechanisms of anti-tumor activity of group A Streptococcus in pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
