WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $399,600 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to Marshall University for mental health research.
“This award from the National Institute of Mental Health will help support the research efforts already happening at Marshall University, while also enhancing the education of our students,” Senator Capito said. “Specifically, this grant will help support our understanding of Astrocyte-Mediated Synaptic Development and how that relates to mental health and treatment for brain disorders. A renewed focus on mental health is increasingly necessary during a time that has been so difficult for so many West Virginians. I will continue to use my role on the Senate Appropriations Committee to secure support for mental health initiatives across our state.”
“The COVID-19 pandemic has placed a heavy burden on West Virginians struggling with mental health issues. I’m pleased HHS is investing in mental health disorder research at Marshall University which will help us support those affected by mental health illnesses. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to advocate for funding to help West Virginians in crisis,” said Senator Manchin.
