CHARLESTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), both members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced a total of $5,109,042 for West Virginia University (WVU) Hospital and the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health. This funding, which is through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will be used to reimburse emergency protective measures as a direct result the COVID-19 pandemic, including personal protective equipment (PPE) distribution, the purchase of supplies for an emergency operations center, and additional actions to reduce the threat of COVID-19 transmission.
“The response from our state’s public health bureau and hospitals were vital in limiting the impact of COVID-19 in West Virginia and helped protect individuals at an elevated risk. I’m glad to see support heading our way to reimburse the quick and brave actions of health professionals in our state,” Ranking Member Capito said. “I will continue to use my role on the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee to help secure the resources our state needs.”
“Our frontline workers have gone above and beyond to care for their fellow West Virginians during the COVID-19 pandemic, and healthcare workers continue to depend on PPE, testing and screening facilities and other medical equipment to keep themselves and our communities safe. I’m pleased FEMA continues to assist WVU and the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health in covering these costs,” Senator Manchin said. “As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for funding to support our healthcare facilities and workers as they care for West Virginians across the Mountain State.”
