WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $629,088 from the U.S. Department of Education to Marshall University for the Talent Search program. This program encourages and supports West Virginians from disadvantaged backgrounds to earn degrees in higher education.
“West Virginia has some of the finest education institutions in the country, and it is important that we continue to support universities that help our students succeed. I am happy to announce this funding for Marshall University, which will help level the playing field so all students have an opportunity to receive a college education and thrive in the workforce. I will continue to advocate for the necessary support and resources that our students in West Virginia need to be successful,” Senator Capito said.
“Every West Virginian should have the opportunity to pursue higher education, regardless of their background. The Talent Search program puts higher education within reach for many West Virginians by helping students in high school realize their educational goals while guiding them through the application and financial aid processes. I am thrilled the Department of Education is investing in Marshall University to support the Talent Search program, and I will continue to advocate for funding to support programs that ensure higher education is accessible to everyone,” Senator Manchin said.
The Talent Search program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete their postsecondary education. The program publicizes the availability of financial aid and assist participant with the postsecondary application process. Talent Search also encourages persons who have not completed education programs at the secondary or postsecondary level to enter or reenter and complete postsecondary education. The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education.
